The Sons of Zattu - Ezra 10:27

In the book of Ezra, Ezra began to name the offspring of the children of Israel who put away their strange wives by listing, the sons of Immer; Harim and Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah; Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer; Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; and of the sons of Elam”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-seven of Ezra, Ezra added “the sons of Zattu”, where we read,

And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

The verse reads, And of the sons of Zattu;” Ezra began with the words, “and of the sons” or “and pertaining to the male offspring and progeny “of Zattu” which means “belonging to Zattu whose name means brightness of him”. Ezra shared how the male offspring of “Zattu” whose name means brightness of him was among the men who put away their strange wives.

The verse continues, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza. Ezra added the word, “Elioenai” whose name means “unto Jehovah are my eyes”, “Eliashib” or “God restores”, “Mattaniah” which means “gift of Jehovah”, “and Jeremoth” or “He is Most High”, “and Zabad” which means “He endows”, “and Aziza” whose name means “strong”. Ezra shared how the men whose names mean “unto Jehovah are my eyes, God restores, gift of Jehovah, He is Most High, He endows and strong” were among the men who married foreign pagan women and put them away.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra how “the sons of Zattu” repented of their marrying pagan women, and they separated from them. The names of these sons speak to the wonder and glory of Jehovah God who provided them with direction and salvation for their lives. God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us. He gave His Only Begotten Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and guide us into all truth through the power of His Holy Spirit to be obedient to Him.

Next time Ezra includes, “the sons also of Bebai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
