Shechaniah, Pharosh and Zechariah - Ezra 8:3

In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush”, and in chapter eight and verse three of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah” where we read,

Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah:

and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty.

The verse reads, Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah:” Ezra began with the words, “of the sons of Shechaniah” which means “from the male offspring, progeny and family belonging to Shechaniah whose name means dweller with Jehovah”, “of the sons of Pharosh” which means “from the male offspring, progeny and family belonging to Pharosh whose name means flea”; “Zechariah” whose name means “Jehovah remembers” and was the eleventh in order of the minor prophets; a priest, son of Berechiah and grandson of Iddo, who, along with Haggai, directed the rebuilding of the temple in the days of Zerubbabel. Ezra included the offspring of “Shechaniah and Pharosh”, and from “Pharosh” was “Zechariah the prophet” that was among the “chief men” who returned to Jerusalem with him.

The verse goes on to say, and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. Ezra continued with the words, “and with him” which means “and alongside and accompanying Zechariah” were reckoned by genealogy or “were enrolled by pedigree and numbered” “of the males” which means “pertaining to the male human beings” “an hundred and fifty” or “one hundred and fifty of them”. Ezra shared how there were one hundred and fifty “chief men” who returned to Jerusalem with “Zechariah”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra about three more of the names of the “chief men”who returned to “Jerusalem” with him. “Shechaniah, Pharos” and “Zechariah the prophet” were known to God, and He had a specific mission for them. God knows us as well, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and call us according to His purpose and plan for our lives in His Kingdom.

Next time Ezra shares about, “Pahathmoab Elihoenai and Zerahiah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
