In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king” among whom were Gershom, Daniel, Hattush, Shechaniah, Pharosh, Zechariah, Pahathmoab, Elihoenai, Zerahiah, Shechaniah, Jahaziel, Adin, Ebed, Jonathan, Elam; Jeshaiah, Athaliah, Shephatiah, Zebadiah, Michael, Joab, Obadiah, Jehiel, Shelomith, Josiphiah, Azgad, Johanan, Hakkatan, Adonikam, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah” as well as hundreds of other men with them, and in chapter eight and verse fourteen of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the sons also of Bigvai,; Uthai, and Zabbud” where we read,
Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.
The verse reads, “Of the sons also of Bigvai;” Ezra began with the words, “of the sons” which means “pertaining to the male offspring, progeny and family” “also of Bigvai” or “even so and indeed belonging to Beivai whose name means in my bodies”. Ezra shared how the offspring of “Bigvai” accompanied him back to “Jerusalem”.
The verse goes on to say, “Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.” Ezra continued with the word, “Uthai”whose name means “helpful”, “and Zabbud” or “and Zabbud whose name means mindful”, “and with them” which means “and alongside and accompanying them, Uthai and Zabbud” “seventy males” or “seventy male human beings”.Ezra included “Uthai, Zabbud” and “seventy other men who were with them in the group of “chief men” who went back to “Jerusalem” with him.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Ezra how the offspring of “Bigvai” as well as “Uthai, Zabbud” and “seventy” other “chief men” accompanied him back to “Jerusalem”. The assembling of God's chosen men to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple along with the reestablishing of worship and the functions of the temple was almost complete. God chooses people today, and everyone is invited to be among the chosen. When we put our faith and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and elect us to be a part of His Kingdom and to spread His gospel throughout the world.
Next time Ezra says, “I gathered them together to the river that runs to Ahava”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
