In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush. Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males. Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males”, and in chapter eight and verse ten of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah” where we read,
And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males.
The verse reads, “And of the sons of Shelomith;” Ezra began with the words, “of the sons” which means “ from the male offspring, progeny and family” “of Shelomith” or “belonging to Shelomith whose name means peaceful”. Ezra mentioned “Shelomith's” male offspring as those who were among the “chief men” who went back to “Jerusalem” with him.
The verse goes on to say, “the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males.” Ezra continued with the words, “the son of Josiphiah” which means “the male offspring, progeny and family belonging to Josiphiah whose name means Jehovah adds”, “and with him” or “and alongside and accompanying him, Josiphiah” “an hundred and threescore males” which means “one hundred and sixty male human beings”. Ezra shared how “Josiphiah's male offspring” and one hundred and sixty other males also returned to “Jerusalem” with him.
When we think through Ezra's words in this verse, we learn how there were male offspring of “Shelomith” and male offspring of “Josiphiah” who made their way back with him to “Jerusalem”. The worship of Jehovah God was being put into place, and one by one these “chief men” joined Ezra in returning to their homeland. God wants us to join Him in Heaven, but our sins have separated us from a personal relationship with Him. For this reason His Son Jesus came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and call us into His Kingdom and service in keeping with His Divine purpose and plan.
Next time Ezra shares about, “the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
