Phinehas, Gershom, Ithamar; Daniel, David and Hattush - Ezra 8:2

In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king, and in chapter eight and verse two of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the sons of Phinehas, Gershom, Ithamar; Daniel, David and Hattush” where we read,

Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush.

The verse reads, Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel:” Ezra began with the words, “of the sons of Phinehas” which means “pertaining to the male progeny and offsprings or family belonging to Phinehas whose name means mouth of brass”; “Gershom” which means “foreigner”: “of the sons of Ithamar” or “pertaining to the male offspring and progeny or family belonging to Ithamar whose name means coast of palms”; “Daniel” which means “God is my judge”. Ezra shared how the offspring of “Phinehas - Gershom” and the offspring of “Ithamar - Daniel” were members of the “chief men” who returned to “Jerusalem” with him.

The verse continues, of the sons of David; Hattush. Ezra added the words, of the sons of David or “and the male offspring and progeny or family belonging to David whose name means beloved”; “Hattush” which means “assembled”.Ezra shared how the male offspring of “David - Hattush” was also among the “chief men” who returned to “Jerusalem”with him.

When we consider Ezra's words in this verse, we see how he began to list the name of the “chief men” who returned to Jerusalem with him at the commission of “Artaxerxes” the king of Persia. God knew all these men, and He called them to follow His leader, Ezra, back to their homeland in Jerusalem. God calls everyone to be a part of His Kingdom through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the whole world, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to follow the direction and leadership of His Holy Spirit wherever He guides us in this life.

Next time Ezra shares about, “Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
