In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush. Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males. Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males. And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males. And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males”, and in chapter eight and verse thirteen of Ezra, Ezra shared about, “the last sons of Adonikam” where we read,
And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these,
Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males.
The verse reads, “And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these,...” Ezra began with the words, “and of the last sons” which means “and pertaining to the hindermost, subsequent and following male offspring, progeny and family” “of Adonikam” or “belonging to Adonikam whose name means”, “whose names are these” which means “the names of the sons of Adonikam are as follows”. Ezra mentioned the following male offspring belonging to “Adonikam” who were among the “chief men” who went back to “Jerusalem” with him.
The verse continues, “... Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males.” Ezra added the word, “Eliphelet” whose name means “God is deliverance”, “Jeiel” or “God sweeps away”, “and Shemaiah” which means “and Shemaiah whose name means heard by Jehovah”, “and with them threescore males” or “and alongside and accompanying Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah were sixty more male human beings”. Ezra shared how “ Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah” along with sixty other “chief men” accompanied him in his return to Jerusalem.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra more of the names of the “chief men” who went back to “Jerusalem” with him. “Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah” and sixty men who accompanied them were the offspring of “Adonikam”, and these men obeyed the call of God and Ezra to go back to their homeland. God continues to call people into His Kingdom today by way of His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and beckon us to follow Him through His Holy Spirit wherever He leads.
Next time Ezra shares about, “the sons also of Bigvai,; Uthai, and Zabbud”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
