The
apostle Paul did not want the Corinthian church members to be
“ignorant” concerning,“how
that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the
sea;”, and
in chapter ten and verse two of First
Corinthians, Paul shared how they were,
“all baptized unto Moses in the cloud
and in the sea” where
we read:
And
were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
The
verse begins, “And
were all baptized unto Moses ...”
Paul began
with the word, “And”
which means “in addition, also, even and indeed” “were
all baptized” or
“were each, every, the whole and everyone immersed or submerged”
“unto Moses”
whose name means “drawing out” and which refers to “towards the
legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of
the Jewish religion”. Paul used the analogy of the people of Israel
walking through the “Red Sea” on dry ground to refer to being
“baptized”
under Moses' leadership.
The
verse continues, “ … in
the cloud and in the sea;” Paul
added the words, “in the cloud” or
“the cloud which led the Israelites in the wilderness” “and
in the sea
which means “ specifically of the Red Sea”. Paul referred to the
way the Israelites were kept “under the cloud” in the wilderness
and walked through the “Red Sea” when they left Egypt.
When
we think through these words from Paul, we understand his correlation
between the Israelites being “baptized”, so to speak, in
the Red Sea as they left Egypt, and they remained “under the cloud”
in the wilderness as they traveled through the desert. This is like
the person who receives Jesus as their Savior and Lord. They come
under the “covering” of God, and they are “baptized”
in water to obey the Lord's command as a public profession of their
faith and trust in Jesus Christ. We should be intrigued by Paul's
examples from the Old Testament, and as he continues to share with
the Corinthians, may we see this as God's desire to redeem people
into a relationship with Him all throughout the ages.
Next
time Paul told the church members how they, “did
all eat the same spiritual meat”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
