The
apostle Paul shared with the church members in Corinth how he did not
want them to be, “ignorant, how that
all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea”.
He added, “and did all eat the same
spiritual meat”.
In chapter ten and verse four of First
Corinthians, Paul shared how they all “drank
of that spiritual rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ”
where we read:
And
did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that
spiritual Rock
that
followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
The
verse begins, “And
did all drink the same spiritual drink:”
Paul began
with the words, “and did all drink”
which means “in addition, even, also they each, every, the whole
and everyone imbibed” “the same”
or “the
like” “spiritual”
which means “belonging to the Divine Spirit” “drink”
or “they received into their souls what serves to refresh,
strengthen and nourish it unto life eternal”. Paul referred to the
way the Israelites “all”
“imbibed” from a “spiritual”
beverage.
The
verse goes on to say, “for
they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock
was Christ.” Paul
continued with the words, “for they
drank” or
“even as, indeed, no doubt, verily and therefore the children of
Israel imbibed” “of that spiritual”
which means “belonging to the Divine Spirit” “Rock”
which means “firmness and strength of soul” “that
followed them”
which means “which preceded, joined as an attendant and accompanied
the children of Israel”: “and that
Rock”
which refers to “that firmness and strength of soul” “was
Christ” or
“the anointed one, the Messiah and the Son of God”. The
Israelites “drank”
from the “rock”
which was stricken by Moses in the wilderness when they were thirsty,
and Paul likened those times to when people
“drink”
from the refreshment that is produced when a person trusts in Jesus
Christ as their Lord and Savior.
When
we meditate upon these words from Paul, we see yet another example
from the Old Testament where God was redeeming people. The rock in
the wilderness was a symbol of Jesus Christ, and those who are
“thirsty” may come to Him and drink freely. Refreshment is given
to them, and eternal salvation is promised to whosoever “believes”
in Him. May all who read these examples know there is a God in Heaven
who has purposed to offer “eternal salvation” to all who will
“drink” of the “Rock”, Jesus Christ.
Next
time Paul told the church members how, “with
many of them God was not well pleased”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
