Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told of horrific events that will be on the earth before He comes again and the end of the world takes place. He also said, “But pray that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day. For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse twenty-two of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said, “except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved” where we read:
And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved:
but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
The verse reads, “And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “and except” which means “an unless” “those days” which refers to “the days of the great tribulation” “should be shortened” or “are abridged and curtailed”, “there should no flesh” which means “shall not one person whether male or female” “be saved” or “kept safe from injury, peril, suffering and disease”. Matthew shared how Jesus said if there was not a “curtailing” of the time period of the “great tribulation”, no one would be kept safe from it.
The verse continues, “... but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.” Matthew added Jesus' word, “but” or “nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and” “for the elect's sake” which means “because of the chosen and picked out by God ones ” “those days” or “the days of the great tribulation” “shall be shortened” which means “will be abridged and curtailed”. Matthew shared how Jesus said because of the “chosen ones of God”, the “great tribulation” period will be abridged.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we understand how horrible this “great tribulation” will be. Every person alive will die if this “tribulation” continued. God knows His “chosen” one during the “great tribulation”, and because of them, He will limit the time of destruction upon the earth. God is in the “saving” business, and His desire is for every person to “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus so they may “escape” the anguish that is to come. May all who read these words seek the Lord with all their hearts and become the “elect” of God who escape these horrific things.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells His disciples what to do, “if any man say unto you, Lo, here is Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
