Eating, Drinking, Marrying and Giving in Marriage - Matthew 24:38

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-eight of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus referred to people, “eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage” where we read:

For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking,

marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

The verse reads, For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “for” which means “even and indeed” “as in the days” or “like unto the times” “that were before the flood” which means “which were in advance of and prior to the inundation and deluge during Noah's time” “they were eating” or “people were consuming and devouring food” “and drinking” which refers to “imbibing”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the way people were “eating and drinking” like normal before Noah's flood came.

The verse goes on to say, “... marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,” Matthew continued with Jesus' word, “marrying” or “being wed to one another” “and giving” which means “and granting, bestowing, furnishing and supplying their daughters” “in marriage” or “to be wed”, “until” which means “unto the time and up to” “the day that Noah entered” or “the actual day that Noah who's name means rest went” “into the ark” which means “in the vessel built in the form of an ark”. Matthew shared how Jesus said people were “marrying” and giving their “daughters” to be “married” right up to the time when Noah went “into the ark”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referenced the way people lived “life as normal” before the time of the flood. People were “eating, drinking, marrying and giving their daughters to be married”, and all the while they were oblivious that their destruction was only days away. God knows the times of our lives, and He desires people to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and He promises to rescue them from the “great tribulation”. No one but God knows when that time will be, and all those who are wise will align with Him so their normal activities do not make them blind what Jesus declared.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how the people who were living during the days of Noah, “knew not until the flood came, and took them all away”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
