Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus instructed His disciples, “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-three of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus told His disciples, “when you see all these things, know that it is near” where we read:
So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
The verse reads, “So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “So likewise you” which means “disciples, in the same way and manner”, “when you shall see” or “at the time and moment the disciples perceive, notice, discern and discover” “all these things” which refers to “each, all, the whole and everyone of the things Jesus spoke about”. Matthew shared how Jesus directed His disciples' attention toward the time when all the things He spoke of occurred.
The verse continues “... know that it is near, even at the doors.” Matthew added the word, “know” or “understand, perceive and become acquainted” “that it is near” or “that the time of the events Jesus spoke of are close at hand, ready and imminent”, “even at the doors” which means “in the position, by and before the vestibule, entrance and passage way”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the things He spoke of were very close at hand and imminent.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted His disciples to know the general timing of His coming and the end of the world. Jesus gave people the signs of the times, and He desires for them to discover Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. God loves everyone, and He knows the timing of the coming of His Son Jesus and the end of the world. Those who are wise will look for Jesus' signs and know His coming and the end of the world shall shortly come to pass.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells His disciples, “this generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
