Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods, And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and dug in the earth, and hid his lord's money”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse nineteen of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said, “after a long time the lord of those servants comes” where we read:
After a long time the lord of those servants comes, and reckons with them.
The verse reads, “After a long time the lord of those servants comes, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “after a long time” which means “moreover when a great length of time went by” “the lord” or “the man or master who went on a journey traveling” “of those servants” which means “belonging to the slaves, bondmen and men of servile condition” “comes” which means “arises, appears and comes forth”. Matthew shared how Jesus said after some time went by the master of the “servants” reappeared.
The verse goes on to say, “... and reckons with them.” Matthew continued with Jesus' words, “and reckons” which means “and cast up or settled accounts” “with them” or “with the servants”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the master returned to “settle accounts” with the servants.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the “day of reckoning” has come. The “master” of the servants came home, and he was going to make an account of each of the “servant's” care for his “talents”. God desires to have a relationship with every person, and He has given them not only the “gift” of His Son Jesus to be their “Savior and Lord”, but has also entrusted them with strengths and abilities which they are to use to promote His kingdom. By faith, labor and love toward the “Master”, each person is to employ their gifts, and there will be a “day of reckoning” for which they shall give an account.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how, “he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
