Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See you not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse three of his book Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “when shall these things be?” where we read:
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world?
The verse reads, “And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be?” Matthew began with the words, “and as he sat” which means “and as Jesus was seated and firmly set” “upon the mount of Olives” or “on the mountain of olive trees”, “the disciples” which means “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “came unto him privately” or “approached and drew near to Jesus alone and by Himself ”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “tell us” or “speak and declare to the disciples themselves”, “when” which means “at what time and moment” “shall these things be” or “will the stones of the temple and the events surrounding it fall and come to pass”. Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples desired to know the future concerning the events Jesus declared.
The verse continues, “and what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world?”. Matthew added the words, “and what shall be” which means “what will exist and come into being as” “the sign” or “ the mark, token or unusual occurrence” “of your coming” which means “pertaining to Jesus' arrival and appearance”, “and of the end” or “and the completion, consummation and finish “of the world” which refers to “pertaining to the unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity and the universe”. Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples desired to know the “mark of time or unusual occurrence” which would show them Jesus' “appearing” and the “world's end” .
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we discover the curiosity within Jesus' disciples concerning “future events”. They knew there would be a time when Jesus would appear as King in His Kingdom, and the world would “end” afterward. Jesus came as the Messiah and Savior of mankind, and His offer is to “save” them from their sins. He will “come again”, and when He comes, He will establish His Kingdom on earth. The book of Revelation tells much of these events in chapters nineteen through twenty-one, and for this study we shall concentrate upon two things: Jesus is coming again, and the world we know now will certainly “end”. The day of salvation is now, and those who are wise will submit themselves to Jesus Christ as “Savior and Lord” and receive His promise of “everlasting life”.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus says, “Take heed that no man deceive you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
