Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse five of his book Matthew shared how Jesus said “many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ” where we read:
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
The verse reads, “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ;” Matthew began with the words, “for many” which means “because, since and on account that a large and great number of people” “shall come” or “will arise, appear and come on the scene” “in my name” which means “in Jesus' name which is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “I am Christ” which means “I myself am the Messiah and Son of God”. Matthew shared how there will be a large number of people who profess themselves to be the “Christ and Messiah” of God.
The verse continues, “and shall deceive many.”. Matthew added the words, “and shall deceive” which means “lead astray and make to wander and roam from the right way” “many” which refers to “a large and great number of people”. Matthew shared how Jesus declared the result of these false “Messiahs” would be to “lead people in error” away from the truth about Him.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how there will be people who come on the scene saying they are the “Messiah” sent from God. During the time of Jesus' time on earth until the end of the world, over and over again people will “lead” others “astray” by their proclaimed “Messiahship”, and they shall believe they follow the truth. Men have proclaimed themselves to be the “Christ” of God, and without naming them, we know that Jesus' words have come true. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Messiah Son Jesus Christ, and no other “pretending Christ” shall ever take His place. Let all who read these words be wise and know, there is only One Messiah, and He is Jesus Christ the Lord.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus warns, “you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
