Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods, And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse seventeen of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus shares how, “he that had received two, he also gained other two” where we read:
And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
The verse reads, “And likewise he that had received two, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “and likewise” which means “and in the like and same manner” “he that had received” or “the servant who was distributed and given” “two” which means “two talents or sums of money weighing a talent and varying in different states and according to the changes in the laws regulating currency”. Matthew shared how Jesus next referred to the servant who was given “two talents” by the man who was traveling to a foreign land.
The verse goes on to say, “... he also gained other two.” Matthew added Jesus' words, “he also” which means “and that servant even so and indeed” “gained” or “acquired” “other two” which means “another two talents or sums of money weighing a talent and varying in different states and according to the changes in the laws regulating currency”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the servant who received “two talents” “acquired” double the amount of “talents” given to him.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how this next “servant” doubled the amount of “talents” with which he was entrusted. His “two talents” were turned into four. God loves people to use their “God given talents” whether it be money, wealth, abilities or whatever else comes from Him to bring “profit” into His Kingdom. Those who are wise will learn what it means to faithfully use what God has given them and be prepared to return it all to Him when He returns.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how, “he that received one went and dug in the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
