Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When you therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso reads, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse nineteen of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said, “woe unto them that are with child” where we read:
And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
The verse reads, “And woe unto them that are with child, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and woe” which is an interjection of grief or denunciation that means “alas!” “unto them” or “toward the women” “that are with child” which means “who are expecting and pregnant”. Matthew shared how Jesus expressed great grief toward those who are “expecting a child” in those days.
The verse goes on to say, “... and to them that give suck in those days!” Matthew continued with Jesus' words, “and to them” or “and to the women” “that give suck” which means “who are nursing their babies” “in those days” or “in the days of the abomination of desolation”. Matthew shared how Jesus added “nursing mothers” to His grievous statement.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see two more groups that shall experience great “woe” during the last days before Jesus returns and the end of the world comes. Women with children and nursing mothers shall go through great difficulties during this time, and this infers no one will be exempt from these horrific events. Jesus Christ came into the world to “save” people from their sins and it's penalty, and when a person yields their life to Jesus, He promises them “everlasting life”. Rescue is on God's mind, and all who are wise will “come unto Him” and allow Him to be their shelter and comfort before these troublesome days come to pass.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus says, “pray that your flight be not in the winter”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
