Hiding the Lord's Talent - Matthew 25:18

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods, And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two, and in chapter twenty-five and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said, “he that received one went and dug in the earth” where we read:

But he that had received one went and dug in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

The verse reads, But he that had received one went and dug in the earth, ... Matthew began with Jesus' word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “he that had received” or “the servant who was given, carried away and delivered” “one” which means “one talent or sum of money weighing a talent and varying in different states and according to the changes in the laws regulating currency” “went and dug” or “left and burrowed” “in the earth” which means “into the arable land, ground, territory or soil”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “servant” who “received one” talent from the man who traveled left with it and “dug into the ground”.

The verse continues, “... and hid his lord's money.Matthew added Jesus' words, “and hid” which means “and concealed and kept secret” “his lord's money” or “the talent or wealth of the servant's master”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “servant” who was entrusted with “one talent” left his master, dug into the earth and kept the “talent” hidden and secret.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we understand how this “servant” operated in fear. Rather than put his “master's talent” to work in trading or labor, this man “hid” it. God gives people “gifts”, and they are to be used in His Kingdom. Many people never understand they must first receive His plan of “salvation” by accepting His Son as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and then they are to “use” their “gifts” to please the Lord and promote His Kingdom. The “servant” who “hid” his master's “talent” is a prime example of what those who believe in Jesus should never do, and those who are wise will examine themselves and discover whether they have aligned with God's plan and are using the “gifts” he has given to them.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how, “after a long time the lord of those servants comes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
