The Showing of the Temple - Matthew 24:1

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus cried out, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that killed the prophets, and stoned them which are sent unto you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, You shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord” , and in chapter twenty-four and verse one of his book Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples came to him, “to show him the buildings of the temple” where we read:

And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple:

and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple.

The verse reads, And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple:” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “went out” or “arose from there and left”, “and departed” or “continued on His journey” “from the temple” or “apart from the sacred place in Jerusalem”. Matthew shared how Jesus left from the “temple” in Jerusalem.

The verse continues, and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple.”. Matthew added the words, “and his disciples” which means “and Jesus' followers, students, pupils and attendants” “came to him” or “approach and drew near to Jesus” “for to show him” which means “because the disciples desired to exhibit, display and set forth to be known and acknowledged” “the buildings” or “the architecture, structure and edification” “of the temple” or “belonging to the sacred place in Jerusalem”. Matthew shared how Jesus' “disciples” approached Him and began to speak to Him about the “architecture and structure” of the “temple” in Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus left the “temple” in Jerusalem, and as He was leaving, His disciples approached Him and talked to Him about the “architecture” of the building which “was a stately and beautiful structure, one of the wonders of the world; no cost was spared, no art left untried, to make it sumptuous. Though it came short of Solomon's temple, and its beginning was small, yet its latter end did greatly increase. It was richly furnished with gifts and offerings, to which there were continual additions made.” According to Josephus “they were huge stones. Many of them weighing up to one hundred ten to one hundred and twenty tons, all carved out so perfectly that they fit together so smoothly, that you cannot even to the present day, insert a knife blade between them.” Many people are stricken by the beauty of “buildings”, and their “architecture” is to be admired. God, however, is interested in people, and His desire to to “save” them from their “sins” and “build” their lives according to His perfect plan through His Son Jesus. Let all who read these words become “the building of God” as they receive Jesus into their lives today.

Next time see Matthew write how Jesus says, “See you not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
