Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse nine of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said, “the wise answered, saying, not so, lest there be not enough for us and you” where we read:
But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you:
but go you rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
The verse reads, “But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you:” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “the wise answered” or “the intelligent, prudent and mindful of one's interest virgins”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “not so lest” or “in no way whether perhaps”; “there be not enough” which means “there will not be sufficient oil” “for us and you” or “for the five wise virgins and five foolish virgins”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “five wise virgins” would not let the “five foolish virgins” have any of their “oil” because there would not be a “sufficient supply” of the fuel for both of them.
The
verse continues, “but
go you rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.” Matthew
added Jesus' words, “but
go you rather”
which means “moreover and the five foolish virgins should instead
proceed” “to
them that sell”
or “toward the merchants who barter or sell” “and
buy”
which means “and do business and purchase oil” “for
yourselves”
or “for the five foolish virgins themselves”. Matthew shared how
Jesus said the “five
wise virgins”
told the “five
foolish virgins”
to go “buy”
their own “fuel” for their lamps from the vendors.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus showed the refusal of the “five wise virgins” to give of their “oil” to the “foolish virgins” and told them to go to the markets to purchase their own “oil”. God desires to give everyone who asks the “oil” of His Holy Spirit, and when they receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, God's “Spirit” comes inside and makes them ready for His appearing. Without a relationship with Jesus, God's “Spirit” will not be within, and they will be in desperation when He appears.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares, “while they went to buy, the bridegroom came”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
