Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples about a man who was going to travel entrusted his “servants” with five, two and one talents according to their ability”. Jesus added, “After a long time the lord of those servants comes, and reckons with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, you delivered unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, you good and faithful servant: you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter into the joy of your lord”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse twenty-two of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus shares how the servant who was given two talents said, “you delivered unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them” where we read:
He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, you delivered unto me two talents:
behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
The verse reads, “He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, you delivered unto me two talents:” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “He also” which means “the servant” “that had received” or “who was delivered and granted” “two talents” which means “two sums of money weighing a talent and varying in different states and according to the changes in the laws regulating currency” “came” or “arose, appeared and came forth” “and said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed, “Lord” which refers to “he to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding or master”, “you delivered unto me” which means “the master gave, committed and commended to the servant” “two talents” or “two sums of money weighing a talent and varying in different states and according to the changes in the laws regulating currency”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said the servant who received “two talents” gave accounting to his master for what he did with them.
The verse goes on to say, “behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.” Matthew continued with Jesus' word, “behold” which means “look, lo, consider and see”, “I have gained” or “the servant had acquired” “two other talents beside them” which means “two additional sums of money weighing a talent and varying in different states and according to the changes in the laws regulating currency”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the servant with “two talents” reported that he made “two more” talents in addition to the original ones.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we discover how this “servant” doubled the amount of “talents” for which he was entrusted like the one with five. Though he was only given “two talents”, the servant produced for his “master”. Those who align with God's plan of salvation through His Son Jesus and use their “gifts” faithfully shall give an account to God that will be pleasing in His sight. Let all who read these words be inspired by the “servant” with “two talents” and purpose to employ God's gifts in His Kingdom.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how the master of the servant who was given two talents says, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
