Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse two of his book Matthew shared how Jesus said, “there shall not be left here one stone upon another” where we read:
And Jesus said unto them, See you not all these things? verily I say unto you,
There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto them, See you not all these things?” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus said” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to His disciples”, “see you not” which means “do you not perceive, notice, discern and discover” “all these things” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the things pertaining to the temple in Jerusalem”. Matthew shared how Jesus drew His “disciples' attention” toward all the features of the “temple” they wanted Him to observe.
The verse goes on to say, “verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”. Matthew added the word, “verily” which means “truly and surely” “I say unto you” or “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “there shall not be left here” which means “none of the following will be disregarded, neglected or omitted” “one stone upon another” or “one of the massive building stones upon another building stone”, “that shall not be thrown down” or “which will not be cast dow, destroyed, demolished and overthrown”. Matthew shared how Jesus said not one of the massive building stones within the temple in Jerusalem would be left upon another because they will be forced apart and thrown down.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus knew the future of the stones of the temple. Though they looked impenetrable because of the massive size, they were to be eventually thrown down. Pastor Chuck Smith wrote, “Today in Jerusalem near the Western Wall just east of the entrance into the temple mount by which you go up to Al-Aqsa mosque, as you look down on the right hand side to the old Roman road, which is down at the bottom of the valley there that has now been excavated, you can see some stones lying just as they fell, just as they were pushed by the Roman soldiers in 70 A.D. when they sacked Jerusalem. And they believe that some of these stones were actually from that temple of which Jesus spake. And you can see the rubble down there in the bottom of the valley, as these stones were just pushed over, and cracked, and broken, and are still lying in disarray in the bottom there on the street, broke these great pavement stones of the street as they fell. But the prophecy of Jesus was literally fulfilled, so that not one stone of Solomon's temple was left standing upon another. They have all been thrown down.” Just as Jesus said, “not one stone was left upon another”, and as we understand that God knows the future of things such as the temple, He knows our future as well. His desire is to save us from our sins through His Son Jesus' death upon the cross, and forgiveness is available for all who ask. Let all who read these words consider God's knowledge of the future and receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” today.
Next time see Matthew write how Jesus' disciples ask Him, “when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
