Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty-five of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus asks, “who then is a faithful and wise servant?” where we read:
Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his household,
to give them meat in due season?
The verse reads, “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his household, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “who then” which means “what person therefore” “is a faithful” which means “is a person who shows themselves worthy of trust in the transaction of business, the execution of command or the discharge of official duties” “and wise” or “and intelligent, prudent and mindful of one's interests” “servant” which means “slave, bondman or man of servile condition”, “whom his lord” or “person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding” “has made ruler over” which means “has ordained, appointed and conducted as the one in charge or administrator” “his household” which refers to “the lord's body of attendants, servants and domestics”. Matthew shared how Jesus questioned who is the person that is “trustworthy and prudent” and will manage the “belongings and servants” for their “master”.
The verse goes on to say, “... to give them meat in due season?” Matthew added Jesus' words, “to give them” or “to grant, supply, furnish and deliver to the lord's servants” “meat” which means “food, rations or wages” “in due season” or “at the proper, opportune or seasonable time”? Matthew shared how Jesus continued to ask who the “faithful and wise servant” is that will provide the proper “wages” for their master's servants when they are due.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus questioned who would be “faithful and wise” for their lord as they attend to his “belongings and servants”. Those who are entrusted with God's ministry are to be “faithful” and “wise” with His people and His gospel, and when they do as they are commissioned, they shall provide the necessary things for those who are in the Kingdom of God. God desires for every person to be in His Kingdom, and access is granted through belief and trust in His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will submit their lives to Him and be “faithful and wise” with the commission in which He trusts them.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus declared, “blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
