Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said “two will be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left” where we read:
Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
The verse reads, “Then shall two be in the field; ” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “then” which means “at that time and moment” “shall two be” or “there will be two people” “in the field” which means “in a piece of land, bit of tillage, farm, country seat or neighboring hamlet”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the way “two people” would be located on “a piece of land”.
The verse goes on to say, “the one shall be taken, and the other left.” Matthew continued with Jesus' words, “the one” or “the one certain person” “shall be taken” which means “will be received and transmitted” “and the other left” or “and the other person will be left in the field”. Matthew shared how Jesus said one of the people in the “field” will be carried away, and the other person will be left to stay there.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we understand the difference between people who will be “carried away” by Jesus and those who will be left on the earth to endure the suffering. Jesus desires to “save” every person from the horror that will occur on the earth during the “great tribulation”, and His warning to them is well in advance of the time when these things shall come to pass. The only way to “escape” these things is to receive Jesus as a personal “Savior and Lord”, and if a person refuses to receive Him, be certain, being left on the earth will have devastating consequences for all those who remain.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how, “two women shall be grinding at the mill”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
