Casting in More than They All - Mark 12:43

Mark wrote how, “Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-three of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “this poor widow has cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:” where we read:

And he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you,

That this poor widow has cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

The verse reads, “And he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he called” or “and Jesus beckoned, bid, invited and summoned” “unto him his disciples” or “to Jesus Himself His students, pupils and attendants”, “and said unto them” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His students, pupils and attendants” “Verily” or “truly and surely” “I say unto you” which means “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims to His disciples” the following words. Mark shared how Jesus “beckoned” His “disciples” to come to Him, and He began to share the following “certain and truthful” words with them.

The verse continues, “... That this poor widow has cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: Mark added the words, “that this poor widow” which means “that the particular woman whose husband had died and was reduced to beggary, asking alms, destitute of wealth, influence, position and honor that Jesus was watching” “has cast more in” or “has put and thrown into the offering box a larger amount of money”, “than all they which have cast into the treasury” which means “than all the other rich people who put and threw their money into the sacred repository”. Mark shared how Jesus declared the “poor widow” to be a greater giver than all the other people who put large amounts of money into the “offering box”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus thought it was important for His disciples to see this “poor widow” as He saw her. Though the “amount of money” seemed to be much less than the rich people contributed, Jesus said this woman “gave” more. God sees the heart of every person, and His desire is for them to have a “heart” like His. This is only made possible through a relationship with His Son Jesus who notices everyone, and He came to “die” for their “sins” and was raised from the grave three days later so they might be “saved” and live with Him forever. God knows what we have and what we give, and this “poor widow” should serve as an example to everyone who possesses and gives in this world.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says the poor widow, “of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
