Mark wrote how Jesus toward the end of the age, “you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved”, and in chapter thirteen and verse fourteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved” where we read:
But when you shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that reads understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
The verse reads, “But when you shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that reads understand,)” Mark began with the words, “but when” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and at the time and moment” “you shall see” which means “Jesus' disciple observe, discern, notice and discover” “the abomination” or “the foul and detestable thing pertaining to idols and idolatry” “of desolation” which means “pertaining to despoliation or spoil”, “spoken of by Daniel the prophet” or “poured forth and uttered through Daniel whose name means judgment of God and was the name of a Jewish prophet who was noted for his wisdom and prophecies”, “standing where it ought not” which means “set in place set up and placed in the location it should not be”, “(let him that reads” or “allow and permit the person who distinguishes, recognizes and knows accurately these things” “understand” which means “perceive, heed, consider and comprehend”.) Mark shared how Jesus warned His disciples to understand the time when“the abomination of desolation” of which “Daniel” spoke about take place.
The verse goes on to say, “then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:” Mark continued with the words, “then let them” which means “at that time allow and permit the people” “that be in Judaea” or “who are living in the city of Judaea which means he shall be praised and was located in the southern portion of Palestine lying on this side of the Jordan and the Dead Sea, to distinguish it from Samaria, Galilee, Peraea, and Idumaea” “flee” which means “seek safety by flight” “to the mountains” or “to the risings above the plains”. Mark shared how Jesus said people who are living in “Judaea” at the time of the “abomination of desolation” should “run” to the mountains surrounding them.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus informed His disciples about the “abomination of desolation” of which “Daniel the prophet” spoke. This time will be when “Satan” has his anti-christ set up an image of himself in the “temple” of Jerusalem and everyone will be commanded to worship it. (See Revelation 13) At this time, anyone who is in Judaea should “run to the mountains” when they see this happening because even greater destruction will occur after this takes place. God loves people enough to let them know these things in advance, and those who are wise will not only study them, but also yield their lives to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
