Not On the Feast Day - Mark 14:2

Mark wrote, “After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death”, and in chapter fourteen and verse two of his book, Mark shared how the chief priest and scribes, “said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people”, where we read:

But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.

The verse reads,But they said, Not on the feast day, ...” Mark began with the words, “But they said” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and the chief priests and scribes uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “not on the feast day” which means “do not seize Jesus upon the day when banquet and spread of the passover would occur”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” decided and declared that they should not attempt to “seize” and “kill” Jesus upon the day of “feasting”.

The verse goes on to say, “... lest there be an uproar of the people. Mark continued with the words, “lest there be an uproar” which means “whether perhaps, peradventure, haply and at any time there exist a tumult, noise, clamor, excited and riotous behavior” “of the people” or “pertaining to the multitude and crowd”. Mark shared how the obstruction to the “religious leaders” seizing and killing Jesus was because of their concern about the multitudes of people becoming riotous over their actions.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “chief priests and scribes” knew there would be a reaction from the people if they attempted to “take” and “kill” Jesus during the “passover feast” time. God knows the thoughts and intents of all people, and though these “religious leaders” were determined to capture and destroy Jesus, He was not unaware of their plans. God wants people to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, regardless of their intentions, He will preserve them for all eternity.

Next time we see Mark shares how, “there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
