Mark wrote how, “one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is none other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, you have said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that did ask him any question”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-five of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asks, “How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?” where we read:
And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple,
How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
The verse reads, “And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, ...” Mark began with the words, “and Jesus” which refers to “and the Son of God, the Savior of the world and God incarnate” “answered” or “responded and began to speak” “and said” which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked”, “while he taught” or “during the time Jesus gave didactic discourse and instruction” “in the temple” which means “within the sacred place of worship and prayers to God”. Mark shared how Jesus began to teach during the time He was in the “sacred worship place” located in Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?” Mark added the words, “how say the scribes” which means “after what manner and means utter, declare and proclaim the men who are learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings and are interpreters and teachers” “that Christ” or “that the anointed One and Messiah” “is the Son of David” which means “exist as the offspring and progeny of King David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel”? Mark shared how Jesus asked people within the “temple” how the “spiritual leaders and teachers” known as the “scribes” could call the “Messiah” the “Son of King David”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus is directing the train of thought within the “temple” in Jerusalem. It is remarkable to remember that He previously chased off the “buyers and sellers” within the temple and upset the tables of the “moneychangers” who were there, and now He is teaching within the same place. Jesus desired for the people to know more about the promised “Christ” or “Messiah”, and because it did not seem to make sense on the surface that the “Messiah” would be “David's Son”, Jesus asked them how the “scribes” taught them such things. God's desire is for every person to have a loving personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who question Jesus should carefully examine all the wonderful prophecies and statements concerning the “Messiah”. Jesus is the “Christ of God”, and He desires to “save” everyone who will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool.” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
