Mark wrote how Jesus, “sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately. Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you”, and in chapter thirteen and verse six of his book, Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples, “many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ” where we read:
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
The verse reads, “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ;” Mark began with the words, “For many” or “because, since and on account that a large and massive group of people” “shall come” or “will arise and appear” “in my name” which means “using Jesus' name which includes everything which the name covers such as the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “I am Christ” or “the anointed One and the Messiah”. Mark shared how Jesus said “a lot of people” would appear declaring that they are the “Messiah” sent from God.
The verse goes on to say, “and shall deceive many.” Mark continued with the words, “and shall deceive” which means “and will lead astray and make wander or roam about” “many” or “a lot of people”. Mark shared how a lot of people will be “lead astray” by those who claim they are the “Messiah” sent from God.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus warned there would be people who would claim to be the “Christ” of God. These people will “deceive” others into believing they are who they claim to be, and because of this they will not receive Jesus Christ who is the true Messiah. From the beginning, in the Garden of Eden, the enemy of God who is Satan, has attempted to sway people away from a relationship with Him. God sent His Son Jesus to the world as His “Messiah, anointed One and Christ” who is the “Savior of the World”. Those who put their faith and trust in Him will be “saved” from their “sins” and receive “everlasting life” with God.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “when you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be you not troubled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
