A Memorial of the Woman - Mark 14:9

Mark wrote how Jesus, “being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble you her? she has wrought a good work on me. For you have the poor with you always, and whensoever you will you may do them good: but me you have not always. She has done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body to the burying”, and in chapter fourteen and verse nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her”, where we read:

Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world,

this also that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

The verse reads, “Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, ...” Mark began with the word, “verily” or “truly and surely”, “I say unto you” which means “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims to the indignant one who were troubling the woman”, “Wheresoever” or “in whatever place or location” “this gospel” which means “the good tidings and news” “shall be preached” or “will be heralded, proclaimed openly and published” “throughout the whole world” which means “to the complete and every part of the circle of the earth”. Mark shared how Jesus promised with certainty that in whatever place the “good news of Jesus Christ” is proclaimed the following will also occur.

The verse continues, this also that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. Mark added the words, “this also that she has done” which means “the act of the woman pouring out her precious ointment upon Jesus” “shall be spoken of” or “will be uttered, declared and proclaimed” “for a memorial of her” which means “as a remembrance and record of this woman”. Mark shared how Jesus said the woman pouring out her precious ointment upon Jesus' head to anoint Him before His burial will be proclaimed as a “record and reminder” of her.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' words concerning this woman have come true. Those who are reading these words are considering what this woman did, and we are almost two thousand years past the time of her actions. God loves to honor those who honor Him, and when they receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall not only be “remembered” for all they offer to Jesus, but shall enjoy everlasting life with God the Father who remembers them.

Next time we see Mark share how, “Judas Iscariot … went unto the chief priests, to betray Him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
