Mark wrote how, “Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-three of his book, Mark shared how the Sadducees asked Jesus, “in the resurrection therefore … whose wife shall she be of them?” where we read:
In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them?
for the seven had her to wife.
The verse reads, “In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them?” Mark began with the words, “in the resurrection” which means “in the raising up from the dead” “therefore” or “then, wherefore and these things being so”, “when they shall rise” which means “at the time and moment the seven brothers are resurrected”, “whose wife shall she be ” or “which one of the brothers will have the woman as their wife” “of them” which means “belonging to the seven brothers”? Mark shared how the “Sadducees” wanted to know which of the “seven brothers” would have the woman as their “wife” after they rose from the dead.
The verse goes on to say, “for the seven had her to wife.” Mark continued with the words, “for the seven” which means “because, since and on account that all seven brothers” “had her to wife” or “married the woman”. Mark shared how the “Sadducees” reasoned that “all seven brothers” married the woman.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “Sadducees” were presenting a problem for Jesus if there was a “resurrection from the dead”. Since “seven brothers” took this woman to be their wife, which one of them would be the husband of the wife when they rose from the grave? God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, they shall understand the reason Jesus came to die for the sins of all mankind. He wanted people to live “eternally” with God. There is a “resurrection” that leads to “eternal life”, and only those who yield their lives to Jesus shall live with God forever.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus questioned, “do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
