I Am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - Mark 12:26

Mark wrote how, “Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-six of his book, Mark shared how Jesus refers to God saying, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?” where we read:

And as touching the dead, that they rise: have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

The verse reads, “And as touching the dead, that they rise: have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, Mark began with the words, “and as touching” which means “moreover concerning the subject of” “the dead” or “people who have breathed their last, expired and perished”, “that they rise” which means “that people who have died are raised, aroused and recalled from death to life”: “have you not read” or “have the Sadducees not distinguished between, recognized or known accurately” “in the book of Moses” which refers to “within the written roll or scroll from Moses who was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion whose name means drawing out” “how in the bush” which means “even as within the thorn, bramble or brier shrub” “God spoke unto him” or “the Godhead bodily and trinity consisting of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit brought word and said to Moses”. Mark shared how Jesus spoke directly to the idea of the resurrection as He questioned whether the “Sadducees” knew accurately the “scriptures” which told about God speaking to Moses in the “burning bush”. (See Exodus 3)

The verse continues, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Mark added the word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” “I am the God of Abraham” or “Me, Myself exist as the Godhead bodily and trinity consisting of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit belonging to Abraham whose name means father of a multitude and was the son of Terah and the founder of the Jewish nation”, “and the God of Isaac” which means “and the Godhead bodily and trinity consisting of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit belonging to Isaac who was the son of Abraham and Sarah and whose name means to laugh”, “and the God of Jacob” or “and the Godhead bodily and trinity consisting of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit belonging to Jacob who was was the second son of Isaac and whose name means heel-catcher or supplanter”? Mark shared how God said to Moses “I am” the God of “Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we notice how Jesus spoke directly to the real question the “Sadducees” had concerning “resurrection” from the dead. First, Jesus validated that “the raising of the dead” is real. People go on living after they have died, and they will be “raised back to life” again. Secondly, Jesus shared proof of God being among the “living” after they died in the scriptures with the story of Moses who saw the “burning bush” and heard God say, “I am” the God of “Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”. Notice, it does not say, when they were alive, or at one time, but “I am” which means God continues to be the “God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”. God desires to be the “everlasting God” of everyone's life, and this is possible by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. When a person yields their earthly life to Jesus Christ, though they certainly will “die” physically one day, they shall go on to live with God “forever and ever” more. Let all who read these words know, understand and believe.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
