Mark wrote how Jesus, “sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately. Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And when you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be you not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues you shall be beaten: and you shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. And the gospel must first be published among all nations”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eleven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus tells His disciples, “the gospel must first be published among all nations” where we read:
But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what you shall speak, neither do you premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak you: for it is not you that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
The verse reads, “But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what you shall speak, neither do you premeditate:” Mark began with the words, “but when” or “however, nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and at the time and moment” “they shall lead you” or “those who lay hold of, guide and direct Jesus' disciples”, “and deliver you up” which means “and betray, commit, commend and give Jesus' disciples over to the governing authorities”, “take no thought beforehand” or “do not be anxious, care or think in advance” “what you shall speak” which means “what Jesus' disciples would utter, declare or proclaim”, “neither do you premeditate” or “no and in no way or manner are Jesus' disciples to care for, attend to carefully practice or contrive”. Mark shared how Jesus said when His “disciples” were “betrayed” to the “governing authorities” they were not to be worried or anxious nor were they to think in advance about what they would say to them.
The verse continues, “but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak you: for it is not you that speak, but the Holy Ghost.” Mark added the words, “but whatsoever” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding, moreover and the words and thoughts” “shall be given you” or “that will be granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied” “in that hour” which means “within that certain time” “that speak you” or “those are the utterances, declarations and proclamations Jesus' disciples were to share”: “for it is not you that speak” which means “because, since and on account that it is not Jesus' disciple themselves that utter, declare and proclaim”, “but the Holy Ghost” which means “but the sacred, pure, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “words” that would be given to His disciples as they stood before the “governing authorities” would not be their words, but actually words from the “Holy Spirit” of God.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus gave His disciples direction for when they were “delivered up” to “magistrates, judges and rulers”. They were not to be “anxious” nor “think in advance” about what they would say because God's “Holy Spirit” would be providing every word they needed when the time came. God sometimes allows people to go through difficult circumstances upon the earth because they become a witness to others of His “gospel”. Jesus Christ, God's own Son, suffered and died upon the cross so people could be “saved” from their “sins” and live eternally with His Father God. There may be times when a Christian is “betrayed” to their “governing authorities”, and when they are, heeding Jesus' words to not be “anxious” or “premeditate” is the best advice because He will be with them and give them all the words they need.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
