Mark wrote how Jesus, “went out of the temple” and “one of his disciples said unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!”, and in chapter thirteen and verse two of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down” where we read:
And Jesus answering said unto him, Do you see these great buildings?
there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
The verse reads, “And Jesus answering said unto him, Do you see these great buildings?” Mark began with the words, “and Jesus answering” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate responding and beginning to speak” “said unto him” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciple”, “do you see these great buildings” which means “do you behold, observe, notice and discern the large and massive edifices, architectures and structures”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned His disciple as to whether He truly observed the “buildings” that he was acknowledging.
The verse goes on to say, “there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Mark continues with the words, “there shall not be left” which means “there will in no way nor manner exist, remain or rest” “one stone upon another” or “one of the massive building stones stacked upon another building stone”, “that shall not be thrown down” which means “that will not be cast down, disunited, overthrown or subverted”. Mark shared how Jesus said not one of the “large building stones” would be left in a stacked manner upon another “large building stone”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus prophesied what would happen to the “large stones” that made up the “temple” in Jerusalem. This came true as Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa said, “some forty years later, when Titus came in and conquered Jerusalem, once they were able to enter the city, the last citadel, the strongest fortress was the temple itself, the strongest building in the city. And so many of the Jews fled to the temple in order to hold off the Roman legion from within the temple. Titus ordered that they just not destroy the temple, but to leave it intact. However, some of the Roman soldiers, drunken, began to fire arrows at the temple, flaming arrows. And the temple caught fire and the Jews inside were cremated. But the intense heat of the fire melted the gold of the dome. And it, being melted, came on down and filled the cracks of the stones. And so then the Roman troops, in order to loot the gold, took the temple down stone upon stone, until the prophesy of Jesus was literally fulfilled. Not one stone was left standing upon another.” Not “one stone was left upon another”, and because God knows all, sees all and perceives all, He knows people will never “live forever with Him” unless He intervened and “saved” them from their “sin”. God sent His Son Jesus to die and pay the price for the “sins” of every person, and now when they “believe and trust” in Him, they shall be forgiven and receive “everlasting life” with God.
Next time Mark shares what happened as Jesus, “sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
