Mark wrote, “ And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where will you that we go and prepare that you may eat the passover?”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “Go you into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water” where we read:
And he sent forth two of his disciples, and said unto them, Go you into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
The verse reads, “And he sent forth two of his disciples, and said unto them, Go you into the city, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he sent forth” which means “and Jesus dismissed and appointed” “two of his disciples” which means “two of Jesus' students, pupils and attendants”, “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to His two disciples”, “go you into the city” which means “depart and leave toward and within the dwelling place, abode and habitation”. Mark shared how Jesus responded to the “disciples” request about finding a location to eat the passover meal by sending “two” of them into the “city” of Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “... and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.” Mark added the words, “and there shall meet you” which means “and within the city the two disciples will encounter” “a man bearing a pitcher of water” or “a male human being who is carrying an earthen vessel, pot, jar or jug with water inside”: “follow him” which means “join to and accompany the man with the pitcher of water”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “two disciples” would “encounter” or “discover” a man who is carrying a “vessel of water” and “accompany” him wherever he was going.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew in advance what His “two disciples” would find when they entered Jerusalem. There, prepared in advance, they would find a man who was carrying a “water jug”, and they were to “follow” him. This may seem small in the eyes of those who only observe it from the surface, but these men were to find the “man with the pitcher of water” just as Jesus said. This is all part of God's plan for the salvation of man, and because people “sinned” against God, they broke fellowship with Him. Now, unless their sin problem was removed, they were destined to live, die and be eternally separated from God. Jesus came to die on the cross for every person's sins, and when they put their faith and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall discover this marvelous plan of God and begin to understand how much He loves them and wants to spend all of eternity with them. .
Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells His disciples to ask the man, “where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
