The Second Husband Died - Mark 12:21

Mark wrote how, “Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-one of his book, Mark shared how the Sadducees told Jesus, “the second took her and died” where we read:

And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.

The verse reads, “And the second took her, and died, ... Mark began with the words, “and the second” which means “and the second brother after the first one who died” “took her” or “married the woman”, “and died” which means “and expired, took his last breath and perished”. Mark shared how the “second of the seven brothers” married the first brother's wife but also “died”.

The verse goes on to say, ... neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. Mark continued with the word, “neither” which means “no and not in any way” “left he any seed” or “did the second brother have any children”: “and the third likewise” which means “and the third of the brothers then married the woman, died and had no children as well”. Mark shared how the second and the third brothers married the woman in sequence after the preceding one died and neither of them had children by her.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “Sadducees” were telling more of their “story”, whether true or fabricated, to present a question to Jesus concerning “resurrection from the dead”. Jesus allowed them to continue their specifics without interrupting them because He knew how to answer them. God loves people, even doubting people, and He has done everything to help them “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will read Jesus' response to these men carefully and submit themselves to the One who knows everything about “the resurrection”.

Next time Mark shares how the Sadducees told Jesus, “and the seven had her, and left no seed” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
