Mark wrote how Jesus, “said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces. And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-one of his book, Mark shared how “Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury” where we read:
And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury:
and many that were rich cast in much.
The verse reads, “And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury:” Mark began with the words, “and Jesus” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “sat over against” or “settled down and was seated directly opposite” “the treasury” which means “the sacred public repository”, “and beheld” or “looked, observed and noticed” “how the people cast money” which means “the manner and way the people threw, poured and inserted coins made of brass, silver and gold” “into the treasury” which refers to “the sacred public repository”. Mark shared how Jesus was seated across from the “sacred public repository” and was watching people put their “money” into the “offering box”.
The verse continues, “and many that were rich cast in much.” Mark added the words, “and many that were rich” which means “and a large amount of people who were wealthy, abundantly supplied and abounding in riches” “cast in much” or “threw, poured, put and inserted a lot of money”. Mark shared how Jesus noticed a large group of people who were “wealthy” in the world's goods as they put their “money” into the “offering box”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was observing not only who was giving, but also the amounts of money they were “casting” into the “offering box”. He noticed these people who were “wealthy” with material things as they put in their money. God knows how much money people have and how much they give. According to David the Psalmist, “The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (See Psalm 24:1), so everything a person owns or possesses is actually God's. Jesus observed these people puting large amounts of money in the “sacred repository”, and He will have more to say about them in the next few verses, however, for now, let us be reminded that “God owns it all”, and when we return a portion our our money to Him of that which He has provided, we acknowledge He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who sent His Son Jesus as the greatest offering ever given so that people may be saved.
Next time Mark shares how “there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
