Mark wrote how Jesus, “began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and dug a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty. And again he sent unto them another servant;and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled. And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. Having yet therefore one son, his well- beloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours. And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And have you not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner”, and in chapter twelve and verse eleven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus says, “this was the Lord's doing” where we read:
This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?
The verse reads, “This was the Lord's doing, ...” Mark began with the words, “this was the Lord's” which means “the chief cornerstone was the one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah's” “doing” or “performance, production and happening”. Mark shared how Jesus continued to quote the scriptures (See Psalm 118:23) as He reminded the “Pharisees and Herodians” that God was the one who planned for the cornerstone to be rejected by the builders.
The verse goes on to say, “... and it is marvelous in our eyes?” Mark continued with the words, “and it is marvelous” which means “and this performance by God is wonderful, admirable, passing human comprehension and excellent” “in our eyes” or “within those who will examine it's faculty for seeing and by implication sight”. Mark shared how those who discover the “chief cornerstone” will understand this was from the “Lord” and it was “wonderful” within their sight.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus completed the scripture in Psalm 118:23. This “scripture” prophesied how this “primary stone” would be “rejected” by people, but would actually be discovered to be the “cornerstone” upon which the rest of the building would rely. Jesus came to the world, was rejected by men, beaten, mocked and killed for the “sins” of all people, and when a person believes and trusts in Him, they recognize that God made His Son Jesus the “cornerstone” upon which His Kingdom is built. Those who are wise will submit their lives to Jesus and enjoy all that God has planned for them within His marvelous Kingdom.
Next time Mark shares how the “religious leaders”, “sought to lay hold on him” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
