The First Commandment - Mark 12:29

Mark wrote how, “one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus answers, “the first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord” where we read:

And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel;

The Lord our God is one Lord:

The verse reads,And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel;” Mark began with the words, “and Jesus answered him” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and spoke to the scribe who came”, “the first of all the commandments is” which means “the chief, first in rank or principle order, charge, precept or injunction of each, every, the whole and everyone of the commandments”, “Hear” which means “be endowed with the faculty of hearing, attend to, consider, understand and perceive”, “O Israel” or “family and descendants of the nation of Israel which means he shall be a prince of God or governed by God”. Mark shared how Jesus began to answer the “scribe” by referring to the “scripture” as His resource. (See Deuteronomy 6:4-5)

The verse continues, The Lord our God is one Lord: Mark added the words, “The Lord” which means “The One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding, master and the title given to God the Messiah” “our God” or “our own Godhead and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “is one Lord” which means “is one certain and particular person who has power of deciding, master and the title given to God the Messiah”. Mark shared how Jesus quoted Deuteronomy chapter six and verse four as He declared the first portion of the commandment that is to be a priority above all the others.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we discover Jesus knew the scriptures as He answered this “scribe”. There is no greater source than the “Word of God” to answer all the questions in a person's life, and when a thorough search of them are made, people find there is only “One Lord”, and God the Father is to be worshiped and adored above all other things. Jesus gave every person access to “God” through His death on the cross and resurrection from the grave three days later. Those who believe and trust in Jesus acknowledge “The Lord our God is one Lord”, and there is no other god that can provide everlasting life to those who believe.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus answers, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
