Mark wrote how, “one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is none other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, you have said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus tells the scribe, “you are not far from the kingdom of God” where we read:
And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that did ask him any question.
The verse reads, “And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Mark began with the words, “and when Jesus” which means “and at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “saw that he answered discreetly” or “observed, perceived and understood that the scribe spoke, responded and said what he said in a mind-having way, prudently and wise manner”, “he said unto him” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the scribe”, “you are not far” or “you, scribe, are not a great way off or distant” “from the kingdom of God” which means “separated from the royal power, kingship, dominion and rule of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Mark shared how the “scribe” responded to Jesus in a “prudent and wise manner”, and He told him he was not very “distant” from God's “royal power and rule”.
The verse goes on to say, “And no man after that did ask him any question.” Mark continued with the words, “and no man after that” which means “and not one person whether male or female any further, more or longer” “did ask him” or “with boldness, endurance or extreme inquiry and investigation question Jesus with” “any question” which means “any other investigations”. Mark shared how no one “asked” Jesus anything more “questions” after the “scribe” was answered so brilliantly.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus quieted the crowd of investigators by answering these “religious leaders'” questions. Jesus was “God incarnate”. In other words, He was “God on earth”, and for anyone to think they could outsmart or outwit the “Creator of the Universe” is pure folly. Jesus' answers stunned these men, and because He knows all, He is able to answer every person who “questions” His validity of being the “Savior, Messiah, Christ and Lord” to the world. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him, and should they have questions, know this, nothing honest they imagine cannot be answered by Jesus Christ who came to save the world from “sin” and “misery”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks, “How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
