Luke the physician wrote how Joseph and Mary, “went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why have you thus dealt with us? behold, your father and I have sought you sorrowing”, and in chapter two and verse forty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked Mary, “did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?” where we read:
And he said unto them, How is it that you sought me?
did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, How is it that you sought me?” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned His father and mother”, “How is it that you sought me” which means “for what reason and cause was it that Joseph and Mary searched and looked for Jesus”? Luke shared how Jesus asked why His earthly father and mother looked for Him.
The verse goes on to say, “did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?” Luke continued with the words, “did you not know” which means “did Joseph and Mary not see, perceive, understand and ascertain” “that I must be” or “that it was necessary and right for Jesus to be ” “about my Father's business” which means “involved in the activity, enterprise and concerns of Jesus' Father who was God”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned His earthly parents as to whether they knew it was necessary for Him to be involved in the concerns of His Father God.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew His purpose in the world. God had a plan for Him to be the “Savior and Lord” of mankind, and in order for Him to fulfill this role, Jesus had to be involved in His “Father's business”. “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”, and His Son Jesus became involved in God's plan even at the age of twelve. Those who examine all the details concerning the sending of God's “Messiah” to the world will find not only that Jesus is His Christ, but by believing and trusting in Him they shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life.
Next time Luke shares how Joseph and Mary, “understood not the saying which he spake unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
