Elders Sent to Jesus by the Centurion - Luke 7:3

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus, “had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die”, and in chapter seven and verse three of his book Luke shared how the centurion sent to Jesus, “the elders of the Jews” where we read:

And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews,

beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

The verse reads, “And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “he heard of Jesus” which means “the centurion considered, perceived and understood pertaining to Jesus”, “he sent unto him” or “the centurion discharged and ordered to Jesus” “the elders” which means “those who in separate cities managed public affairs and administered justice” “of the Jews” or “belonging to the people who by origin, birth and religion belong to the Jewish nation”. Luke shared how the centurion “heard” about Jesus and sent the men who “managed the public affairs of the Jewish people” to Him.

The verse continues, “... beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.” Luke added the words, “beseeching him” which means “requesting, desiring, begging and entreating” “that he would come” or “that Jesus arise and appear” “and heal his servant” which means “and cure, restore to health and rescue the centurion's bondman or man of servile condition”. Luke shared how the “elders” entreated Jesus to come and “cure” the centurion's “bondman”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “centurion” reacted when he “heard” about Jesus. Desperate people will do desperate things, and regardless of the “national” affiliation or the religious differences, this “centurion” believed Jesus could “heal” his “servant” and sent for Him. Those who recognize their “need” for Jesus and His ability to change their present situation should “send” for Him. God the Father's desire was for all people to have a “desperate” need to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and the wise person will not only “read” about Him, but will realize He has the power to “help” them in both their physical and spiritual needs.

Next time Luke shares how people begged Jesus because, “he was worthy for whom he should do this”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
