Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was journeying to a centurion's house to heal his servant, the centurion sent word to Jesus, “Lord, trouble not yourself: for I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof. Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto you: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel”, and in chapter seven and verse ten of his book Luke shared how the centurion's messengers, “returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick” where we read:
And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
The verse reads, “And they that were sent, returning to the house, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they that were sent” or “and the friends of the centurions who were dispatched to Jesus”, “returning to the house” which means “when they went back to the dwelling place and abode where the sick servant was”. Luke shared how the friends of the centurion went back to his home where the centurion's sick servant was located.
The verse goes on to say, “... found the servant whole that had been sick.” Luke continued with the words, “found the servant whole” which means “discovered, learned, notice and discerned that the centurion's bondman or man of servile condition was cured and restored to health” “that had been sick” or “who was previously weak, feeble, without strength, ill and needy”. Luke shared how the “servant” of the centurion who was “sick” was healed of his sickness.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the centurion's friends went back to his house and discovered the centurion's “servant” was “healed”. Jesus had the power to cure the servant with his word, and He showed His power to the centurion and his friends. Matthew the apostle's account of this story reads, “Jesus said unto the centurion, Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour” (See Matthew 8:13), and when Jesus gave the word, the servant was cured. Jesus desires people to come to Him in humility and belief, and when they do, He is able to do more with His single word than any other person could do in a lifetime.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “went into a city called Nain”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
