All the People Heard Jesus - Luke 7:29

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when the messengers of John were departed” Jesus “began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went you out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went you out for to see? A prophet? Yes, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, which shall prepare your way before you. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke shared about, “all the people” that “heard him” where we read:

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans,

justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

The verse reads, “And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, ...” Luke began with the words, “and all the people” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the people both male and female” “that heard him” which means “who were given the faculty of hearing, attended to, consider and perceived Jesus' words”, “and the publicans” or “and the tax gatherers, collectors of taxes and public revenue”. Luke referred to each and everyone of the “people” and “tax collectors” who listened to Jesus.

The verse continues, “... justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.” Luke added the words, “justified God “rendered righteous, pronounced as He ought to be the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “being baptized” or “being submerged or immersed in water” “with the baptism of John” which means “with the submersion and immersion in water by John the Baptist”. Luke shared how the people who listened to Jesus “glorified” God since they were “baptized” in water by “John the Baptist”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see the response of the people and tax collectors who listened to Jesus speak. They “rendered God as righteous” since they were “baptized” by John the Baptist, and now that they understood he was the fore-runner of the Messiah, it cause them to exalt God as well. Those who understand the love of God and His desire to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus will not only yield their lives to Him, but also “glorify” God who set all these things in order for the salvation of mankind.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells the people, “the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
