Jesus Healing Infirmities - Luke 7:21

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the disciples of John showed” John “of all these things. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist has sent us unto you, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another?”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities, and plagues, and of evil spirits” where we read:

And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits;

and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

The verse reads, “And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits;” Luke began with the words, “and in that same hour” or “and within the selfsame hour of time that John's men came to Jesus” “he cured many of their infirmities” which means “Jesus healed, restored to health and restored a lot of people from their ills, sicknesses and diseases” “and plagues” or “scourgings, calamities and misfortunes”, “and of evil spirits” which means “and from labors, annoyances, hardships and toils caused by wicked and bad essences which are devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”. Luke shared how Jesus began to “heal” people of their “ills, calamities and troubles caused by wicked spirits”.

The verse continues, “and unto many that were blind he gave sight.” Luke added the words, “and unto many that were blind” which means “and toward a lot of people who were without sight or with opaque and smokey vision” “he gave sight” or “Jesus restored their ability to see”. Luke shared how a great number of people who could not see had their “sight” restored by Jesus.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus began to respond to John the Baptist's men by “working miracles” before their eyes. People with various “illnesses and diseases” as well as troubles caused by “evil spirits” were made whole by Jesus, and those who were without “sight” began to see. Jesus had power over every physical malady that was presented to Him, and because John's men expressed his doubt to Jesus, Jesus showed them He was indeed the Messiah. God loves people, and though His ultimate plan is the “salvation” of the souls of mankind, His demonstration of His ability to overcome every physical difficulty proved He is the “Messiah and Christ” of God who came to take away the sins of the world.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells John the Baptist's disciples, “go your way, and tell John what things you have seen and heard”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
