Jesus Eating at a Pharisee's House - Luke 7:36

Luke the beloved physician wrote how the Lord Jesus asked, “Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and you have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say, He has a devil. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and you say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! But wisdom is justified of all her children”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared how, “one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him” where we read:

And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him.

And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.

The verse reads, “And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him.” Luke began with the words, “and one of the Pharisees” or “and a particular and certain one of the Pharisees who were the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life” “desired him” which means “requested, entreated and begged Jesus” “that he would eat with him” or “that Jesus would consume and devour food with the Pharisee”. Luke shared how a particular “Pharisees” or “religious leader” wanted Jesus to go to His home and “eat” a meal “with him”.

The verse goes on to say, “And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.” Luke continued with words, “and he went” which means “and Jesus left, departed and came forth” “into the Pharisees's house” or “inside the home and dwelling place of religious leader known as a Pharisee”, “and sat down to meat” which means “and reclined, was seated, fixed and established to consume food with the Pharisee”. Luke shared how Jesus followed the “Pharisee” into his home where He reclined to “eat” with him.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus complied with the Pharisee's desire for him to come and dine with him. Jesus entered the home of the Pharisee, reclined at the Pharisee's table for food and ate with him. In those days most of the eating was done in a reclining position unlike the way we sit at our tables to eat, and we can imagine Jesus reclining to eat the Pharisee's meal. Jesus loved to “eat” with people, and because eating and drinking with someone demonstrated a “oneness” with them, Jesus did not refuse. God loves people, and His invitation to every person is to “come and dine” with Him in His Heavenly Kingdom through a relationship with His Son Jesus. Those who invite Jesus to come into their lives will find Him willing to enter their hearts to live, eat and drink with them in all areas of their lives.

Next time Luke shares how, “a woman in the city, which was a sinner … brought an alabaster box of ointment”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
