Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the disciples of John showed” John “of all these things. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist has sent us unto you, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells John the Baptist's disciples, “go your way, and tell John what things you have seen and heard” where we read:
Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things you have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
The verse reads, “Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things you have seen and heard;” Luke began with the words, “then Jesus” or “at that time and moment Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “answering said unto them” which means “responded and began to speak by uttering, declaring and proclaiming to the men John the Baptist sent”, “go your way” or “depart and be dismissed from Jesus”, “and tell John” which means “and bring word or tidings to John the Baptist whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver” “what things you have seen” or “all the miracles that John's men saw and observed” “and heard” which means “and attended to, considered, understood and perceived”. Luke shared how Jesus responded the men John the Baptist sent, told them to depart from Him and proclaim to John the Baptist everything they “saw” and “heard” Him do.
The verse goes on to say, “how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.” Luke added the words, “how that the blind see” which means “in the way that those who could not physically see or had smokey or opaque vision were given sight”, “the lame walk” or “and people who were deprived of foot, maimed, limping and cripple ambled about”, “the lepers are cleansed” which means “people who were filled with leprosy which was a scaly, rough and abrasive swelling of the skin that caused insensitivity in the nervous system and separated people from their families to be made clean, free from defilement, purified and consecrated”, “the deaf hear” or “people who were unable to hear sounds, tones and voices were made to hear”, “the dead are raised” which means “people who were without life, inanimate, had breathed their last and deceased were brought back to life again”, “to the poor” or “to people who were reduced to beggary, asking alms and destitute of wealth, influence, position and honor” “the gospel is preached” which means “had the good news and tidings of God's Kingdom declared and proclaimed to them”. Luke shared how Jesus told the men sent to Him by John the Baptist to tell Him how they saw “lame”people “walk”, “lepers cleansed”, the “deaf be able to hear”, “dead” people brought back to life and the “poor” people had the “good news” of God's Kingdom declared to them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus ministered to people and helped them regardless of their physical conditions. Jesus did miracles among the people, and the men whom John the Baptist sent were able to see them. These men were now commissioned by Jesus to go and tell John their story and the wonderful things they saw Jesus do. God loves people, and He sees all the physical difficulties they face in their lives. He sent Jesus to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world, and those who study His miracles and service to people will recognize Him to be the Messiah and Christ tow whom they should submit their lives. Afterward they will desire to let other people know just how wonderful Jesus Christ and His “gospel” are to all who believe.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells John the Baptist's disciples, “blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
