Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus, “had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum”, and in chapter seven and verse two of his book Luke shared about, “a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die” where we read:
And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
The verse reads, “And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, ...” Luke began with the words, “and a certain centurion's servant” or “and a particular and specific slave, bondman or man of servile condition who belonged to a centurion or officer and captain of one hundred men in the Roman army”, “who was dear unto him” which means “that was held in honor, prized and precious to the centurion”, “was sick” or “was ill, amiss, diseased and grievously miserable and sore”. Luke shared how there was a particular “bondman” who belonged to a “centurion” within the city of “Capernaum”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and ready to die.” Luke continued with the words, “and ready” which means “and at the point and set” “to die” or “to be deceased, finish his life and be dead”. Luke shared how the “centurion's servant” was at the brink of “death”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about a “Centurion” within the city of “Capernaum” whose “dearly loved” “servant” was “sick” and about to “die”. We shall learn what this “Centurion” does about his servant's illness in the next verses, but for now let it suffice us to know that there are “sicknesses” within the world that lead to “death”. The scripture is very clear, “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (See Hebrews 9:27), and everyone will face death at some point in their lives. The question is, what about the “judgment” that follows? Jesus Christ came into the world to pay the penalty for the sins of the world, and those who believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will receive “forgiveness for their “sins” and “everlasting life” with God which is the ultimate “healing” for the greatest “illness” within mankind.
Next time Luke shares when the centurion, “heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
