Whoever Comes to Jesus and Hears Him - Luke 6:47

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus asked, “And why call you me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”, and in chapter six and verse forty-seven of his book Luke shares how Jesus said referred to, “whoever comes to me, and hears my sayings” where we read:

Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like:

The verse reads, “Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, ...” Luke began with the words, “whosoever” or “whatever person whether male or female” “comes to me” which means “who approaches and appears to become known by Jesus”, “and hears my sayings” or “and listens to, attends to, considers, understands and perceives the sense of Jesus' utterances, declarations and proclamations”, “and does them” which means “and produces, makes ready and prepares Jesus' utterances, declarations and proclamations”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to people who “approach and appear” before Him, “listen to and understand” His “words” and perform what He “says” as well.

The verse goes on to say, “... I will show you to whom he is like:” Luke continued with Jesus' words, “I will show you” which means “Jesus will teach, make known by words and exhibit to the disciples listening to Him” “to whom he is like” or “what kind of person that one resembles”. Luke shared how Jesus said He would “make known” to those listening to Him what kind of person the one who “hears” Jesus “sayings” and “does” them is like.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus addressed the person who “yields” their life to Him not only to “hear” what He said, but also to “do” what He said as well. God the Father desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who truly yield to Him will have lives that manifest obedience to what He says. Too often people are “hearers of the word” but not “doers” of the word (See James 1:22). What a person “hears” is manifested in their lives, and those who are wise will pay particular attention to the illustration Jesus will give in the next few verses. Those who submit their lives completely to Jesus will not only “hear” Him, but also “obey” His instruction for their lives.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “he is like a man which built a house … on a rock”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
