Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not”, and in chapter seven and verse fourteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “young man, I say to you, Arise” where we read:
And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still.
And he said, Young man, I say unto you, Arise.
The verse reads, “And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still.” Luke began with the words, “and he came” or “and Jesus approached near to the the widow and the dead son” “and touched the bier” which means “and fastened His hand to and clutched the funeral couch”: “and they that bare him stood still” or “and the people who were carrying the funeral couch stopped their progress”. Luke shared how Jesus went toward the dead son of the widow, touched the “couch” upon which he “lay” and stopped the progress of those who were carrying him.
The verse goes on to say, “And he said, Young man, I say unto you, Arise.” Luke continued with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “young man” or “youthful male offspring” “I say unto you” which means “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to the dead son”, “Arise” or “arouse from sleep, awake or be recalled from the dead to life”. Luke shared how Jesus told the widow's dead son to “awake and be recalled from death to life”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus interrupted this funeral. Though people were carrying this widow's son to be buried, Jesus stopped their progress. Jesus would demonstrate His power over “death”, and because He came to give “eternal life” to everyone who will submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He would demonstrate His power over death. God loves people, and He cares about every sorrow and sadness they endure, and even when death comes to a family and circumstances look bleak, Jesus is there to bring comfort, hope and the promise of “everlasting life” with God to all who believe.
Next time Luke shares how, “he that was dead sat up, and began to speak”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
