Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto you, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother”, and in chapter seven and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how, “there came a fear on all” where we read:
And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying,
That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God has visited his people.
The verse reads, “And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and there came a fear on all” or “and a fear, dread, terror and reverence overcame each, every, the whole and everyone of the people who saw Jesus raise the widow's son from the dead”: “and they glorified God” which means “and the people who saw Jesus praised, honored, magnified and celebrated the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how the people who saw Jesus raise the widow's son back to life were in awe and began to “praise and honor” “God” for the things they saw.
The verse goes on to say, “That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God has visited his people.” Luke continued with the words, “that a great prophet” which means “that an eminent for ability, virtue, authority and power one who moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declared to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “is risen up among us” or “has aroused, been raised, produced and caused to appear with the people”; “and, that God” or “and, that the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “has visited” which means “has looked upon or after and examined in order to help or benefit” “his people” which refers to “God's nation of those who are of the same stock and language”. Luke shared how the people who saw Jesus raised the “widow's son” back to life again concluded that Jesus was a “great prophet”, and that “God” looked upon His “people” to help and benefit them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see the reaction of the people who saw Jesus perform the miracle upon this widow's son. They could not deny her son was dead and now alive, and this cause them to “praise” God and recognize Jesus as a “great prophet” who was with them. God sent His Son into the world to demonstrate His love for people and His desire to live with them forever. Sin kept people separated from God, and eventually lead to “death” - “the wages of sin is death” (See Romans 6:23), and Jesus showed He has power over “sin, death and the grave” when He raise this son. Those who are wise will carefully consider Jesus' power over “death” and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” who is able to raise to life again those who shall surely die.
Next time Luke shares how, “this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judaea”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
